Riverside East Extension – April 2015 Update

I have made a number of posts charting the progress of the extension to Riverside East at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University. All the exterior work is essentially complete with the addition of some concrete steps in the past few days. As you can see from the previous posts and the images below, the extension is moving along and should be ready for use this summer.

Crowds Viewing the Eclipse Outside RGU Riverside East

Below are just a few images taken in front of the Riverside East building at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University – 20th March 2015. As you can see quite a good number of people gathered outside to watch the Solar Eclipse. It reached maximum coverage around 09:38 in the morning. We will have to wait until 2090 to see another Solar Eclipse in the UK.

Riverside East Extension – Pouring the Floors & Cladding

In May I made a post charting the clearing of the site and foundation work for the extension to RSE covering the period from January to May.

The second post about the extension came in July and charted the construction of the steel frame.

This post covers the period of August to the start of October during which time concrete floors were poured across all levels and the process of cladding the building commenced. As you will see for some of the last few images a good deal of the internal cladding layer has had a layer of insulation applied.

Riverside East Extension – Building the Steel Frame

Following on from my previous post in early May which charted the clearing of the site and foundation works starting in January 2014, this post shows the evolution of the steel frame covering a period from early May up until today 18th July. This new addition to the Riverside East building will house the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. It is expected the work will be completed by summer 2015.

Riverside East Extension – the First Few Months

During the summer of 2013 a new building called Riverside East at the Garthdee campus of Robert Gordon University went into operation. The building houses the university library, and a number of schools, namely the School of Pharmacy & Life Sciences, School of Engineering and the School of Computing Science and Digital Media. During the course of construction I charted its evolution in the form of a number of posts, some of which can be seen below.

This new addition to the Riverside East building will house the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. Work began on site towards the end of January 2014. The photographs below document the clearing of the site and the initial foundation works up to 5th May 2014. It is expected the work will be completed by summer 2015.

Quadcopter Flying Around Campus – Video

We had a number of very nice days last week, blue skies and sunshine all day long, hence as part of a module I have with 1st year computing students I took the class outside to experiment with some quadcopter flying. We had two DJI Phantom quadcopters in operation with Go Pro’s attached to capture the scene. One can see some still image captures at the following post.

In the first video above we were all arranged in a circle the radius being calculated by the average width of a student x the number of students / Pi / 2 / 2. This amounted to a radius of a little over 16 feet or roughly 33 feet in diameter. The reason for this was to attempt a “Bullet-time” capture of a quad-copter hovering in the centre of the circle, with the students taking photographs on all their phones. If you look closely at roughly the mid point of the video above you will see the second quadcopter taking off and flying around a little bit.

The flights took place towards the west end of campus next door to the Scott Sutherland Building and the Round Tower, see the map below.

Time-lapse Videos of Assembling a Motion Capture System

The following videos show the process of assembling a 12 camera Optitrack Flex 13 system. We originally got the system little over a year ago at which time I created a number of videos showing the process, see the following blog post.

This blog post follows on from my previous post which included quite a number of photographs showing the process of assembly.

The first video below was recorded at 1fps, hence is running at 25x real-time speed. It shows the mounting of the cameras, the wiring of the up to the capture workstation and their repositioning with respect to the capture volume. You may also spot the setting up of a 5.1 Speaker System (Logitech Z906), that can output 500 watts of auditory bliss.

Two days later I got around to tidying some things up and calibration of the system. With the system fully operation and tested out all that was remaining was to tidy up the cables and make everything good and neat.

If you want to see a faster version of the first video above then this one below run at about 60x real-time and is a little under 3.5 minutes in length.

This very first assembly video created in September 2012 has received 1812 views to-date. As you can see it was setup in a much smaller room than in the videos above. Consequently the effective capture volume was limited to a cylinder of just a feet. If you like a spot of Vivaldi with your time-lapse videos this you may enjoy taking a look.

The following playlist includes over 40 videos documenting the process of setting up the MoCap system.

Moments in time of Building a Motion Capture System

Over the past few days I have been assembling a 12 camera Optitrack Flex 13 Motion Capture System in the Schools new Green Screen Room. The first set of images below are a photography journey of this process of the first day working on this. The consisted of setting up the workstation, mounting the cameras, wiring them up and positioning them with respect to the capture volume. Have written more about the process at the following blog.

13 Videos of Riverside East Illuminated at Night

A recent post a few days ago was a collection of photographs featuring the roof of the Riverside East building at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University. This series of videos was recorded at the same time the photographs were taken and show the ever changing lighting that is directed towards the ceiling of Riverside East. The first of these videos is a timelapse showing the exterior as seen from the library tower.

Riverside East at Night 28th October 2013

Following on from my previous post (26th July 2013) which featured the completed Riverside East building during the day, this set of photographs were taken late in the evening on the 28th October. The timing seemed appropriate as it was the first day of classes after the clocks went back an hour. Hence the winter months are well on the way as the nights get longer. The following are just a few other posts charting the development of the Riverside East Building at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 14 May 2013

Its been a while since my last photo update showing the progress of the New Build at the Garthdee campus of Robert Gordon University. As you can see the main entrance and plaza is almost complete, and the final stages of tidying things up are well underway at the south side of the library tower.

Sunrise Timelapse RGU Garthdee Campus

Yesterdays post contained some photographs taken from the roof of the Round Tower at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University. This post as the title says includes a number of timelapse videos taken around 06:30 in the morning just as the sun was rising.

A few images of the Round Tower may also be seen below, giving some idea of the location from where the videos were recorded & yesterdays photos were taken.

Sunrise from the Round Tower Garthdee Campus

Some photographs taken from the roof level of the Round Tower Accommodation block at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University taken around 06:30 in the morning. This early morning photographic session was organised due in part to a module I have concerning graphics with 1st year computing students. Ah – the things one does to readily promote active student engagement. Suffice to say that it was a really cold spot to be taking pictures at that time of the morning, it certainly must have been around zero degrees. You can expect to see some timelapse video in the next post, so check back again soon. The photographs are taken looking both to the east and west. The images looking east take in the new Library Tower that is expected to be operational by the end of May, the Faculty of Health & Social Care, RGU:Sport and the Aberdeen Business School in the foreground. Towards the end of the post, looking west, you will see some mountains far off in the distance, seeing these images immediately makes me think of Middle Earth, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 30 Sept 2012

It has been a number of weeks since my previous post focused on the interior of the New Build. The first week of classes has concluded and during that time some students inquired as to when the next photo update would be. Given that it’s the last day of September, it seems only fitting to finish off the first week of the semester with an update. One can see that the main entrance wall is in place and the Universities names features prominently. This has been in place for just a few weeks now. The glass surround at roof level of the library tower has also been in place a few weeks. Glass has been installed at the main entrance into the building, hence it’s getting very close to being fully watertight. Student services has been moved into level 3 of the FOHS Building, so its a one stop shop for all student queries. The other major point of note is that since the start of this week the number 1 bus now goes through campus, entering at the main entrance and exiting by ABS. Additional traffic lights have been set in place on Garthdee road to accommodate this.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 15 Aug 2012 Interiors

Nine people visited the site of the New Build at Garthdee this morning, of the nine four were from Computing. We went on a quick tour around the site, unfortunately due to work being carried out we were unable to get up onto the roof of the library tower, however we did manage to climb our way all the way up to the level below the roof. As you can see from some of the photographs looking at the FOHS building it was a very foggy day hence the views from the roof of the library tower would have been very limited. The vast majority of the photographs below are of the main open spaces. One can see an image from level seven of the library tower midway through the set (the large “07” in the image before should prime you for same). The final pair of images show the construction of the floors which are made up of metal panels elevated up about 12 to 14 inches and one of the computer labs. To view the images in greater detail one can access the following photo album. To see how the building has evolved over the pasts months one can examine the following link.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 11 Aug 2012

The following set of photographs are focused on the south face of the build. As you can see the glazing to the library tower has been completed, with just the utility space on the roof to be clad. The final four panels to the north side of the tower were installed today (13/08/2012) thereby completing the process of glazing the primary structure of the library tower.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 1 Aug 2012

As you will see from the photographs below the glazing of the library tower is now nearing completion. A little over two weeks ago the glazing process was around the half way point. All going well it should be completed in the not too distant future and once fully weather proof the focus can shift to the internal fitting out. In just 12 months time staff should be settling in to the new build in preparation for the forthcoming 2013 Academic year.

Hard and Soft Light at the New Build Robert Gordon University

Short video showing the interplay of Hard and Soft Light as the clouds pass overhead at the New Build Robert Gordon University, Garthdee, Aberdeen, Scotland. The footage was recorded over a period of about 12 minutes or so and sped up using time remapping by around 400%. This footage was recorded around half six in the morning.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 14 July 2012

It has been just over a month since I posted the last set of photographs on the 12th June. In the past month there has been quite a good deal of work carried out, in particular, quite a substantial amount of the glazing units for library tower have been fitted in place. The main entrance walls are also coming along well. The walls have been constructed from brick and then faced off as you can see in some of the photos below. I took the first set of photographs looking from from Tullos Hill shortly after six o’clock in the morning, it was fortunate I began at this time, as when I got to the bottom and had packed away the camera it began to rain. At the present rate of progress all the exterior cladding and the installation of glazing units should be completed fairly soon, thereby setting in place the completed look and feel of the building. Additional photographs from the set below may be seen by accessing the following Album.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 12 June 2012

Its been a bit over two weeks since the last photo update. In that period the most visible change is the commencement of the cladding process to the final section – the main entrance. This addition finally gives an impression of the overall scale and mass of the building, thereby giving a clear impression of what the final end product will be like. The other change clearly evident in the first few photographs is the start made to the walls of the main entrance into the campus.

RGU Garthdee New Build views from Kincorth Hill

The weather today was once again wonderful, so I ventured up Kincorth Hill to get some panoramic shots of the city, with a particular focus of how the New Build at Robert Gordon University, Garthdee fits in with the surrounding landscape. Hopefully the following photographs will provide you with a good sense of the area and how it fits into place. The following brochure provides some very useful information detailing the walks available.
