Riverside East Extension – Building the Steel Frame

Following on from my previous post in early May which charted the clearing of the site and foundation works starting in January 2014, this post shows the evolution of the steel frame covering a period from early May up until today 18th July. This new addition to the Riverside East building will house the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. It is expected the work will be completed by summer 2015.

Quadcopter Flight around Campus in Pictures

The previous post focused on some video captured during the flights of a couple of DJI Phantom Quadcopters around the campus of Robert Gordon University. This post includes a few images selected from a flickr set captured during a class with our 1st year computing students. One of the quadcopters was setup to capture video, the other to capture time-lapse images, one every 30th of a second.

The image below is looking East with the Aberdeen Business School, RGU Sport, the Faculty of Health & Social Care and finally Riverside East with the nine story Library Tower standing tall in the background (roughly six minutes of a walk away). One should of also point out that the river Dee is to be seen on the right.

Looking West in the image below one can see the Round and Square towers, as well as the Central Services & Scott Sutherland Buildings. Further east of course is Grays School of Art, but isn’t visible in the frame.

If you look closely in the image below you just may spot the second Quadcopter taking off from within the middle of a circle of students!

In the image below one can just barely see the roof of the Grays School of Art and a fairly good view of the Scott Sutherland Building in the foreground next door to the Central Services Building.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 26 July 2013

Following on from some recent posts (9th July 2013) and (2nd June 2013). The finishing touches have been speeding along. The general exterior area down towards the eastern end of the building has been cleaned up and you will even see a small pond surrounded with planting located at the very eastern tip of the campus. The majority of the internal furnishings have been put in place, and all the Schools and Research Institutes have now moved into the building. The last remaining School, the School of Computing Science and Digital Media will take up residence on Monday 29th July 2013. Quite a number of the images below are of the open spaces including catering areas that look out in a southerly direction over the river Dee. In some of the exterior shots you will see quite an amount of bicycle parking facilities and some exterior benches and litter bins dotted around the campus. In a few other exterior shots you just may manage to see some packing creates sitting close to the windows from the School of Computing’s move. You will also notice quite a bit of signage to be seen at the entrances identifying the Schools in residence at the building.

Back towards the end of January 2013 I made the following post charting the photographic evolution of Riverside over the course of sixteen months. With the final elements of the build almost complete I will create another similar post in the near future with a tentative title of “Riverside East a Story in 2000 Pictures” again just highlighting its evolution which by then would be almost a two year period.

The first image in the set seen below was captured looking through a glass panel that is picking up the reflections of some trees, with the library tower clearly evident peering above the roof top of the main section of the building. Following on from that is a sign located in the plaza directly outside the main entrance of Riverside East.

Hogwarts Orlando Lightning Storm – Voldemort begins his Assault

My first visit to Universal Studios was around 18:00 in the evening in early August 2010. It just so happend that I timed it perfectly as my first glimpse of the new Hogwarts World of Witchcraft & Wizardary was seemlingly under attack by Voldemort’s Deatheaters, or you could say that there was just a few lighining strikes happening in the vacinity, some of which just lined up perfectly with the Castle as you can see below. The photos below are of stills captured from a number of videos I recorded of the event. Enjoy. You can see the video here.

The Psychology of Color – Fascinating!

Here is a really nice infographic on the use of colour. One thing to note however is that the meanings associated with particular colours can differ based on culture. Take a look for example at the colour Red.

IDEAS Research Seminar 27th Jan 2012

Our first IDEAS Research Seminar for 2012 took place today at St Andrew Street, C48 14:15 to 15:15. The invited speakers Dr Judy Robertson & Mr Andrew MacVean from Heriot-Watt University talked about the research they are doing in the area of Exergames.

Computing & Digital Media Research Seminars

Dr Judy Robertson, Mr Andrew MacVean – Heriot-Watt University

Lessons Learned from a Preliminary Study of an Exergame for
children

With evermore children in the Western world adopting a sedentary
lifestyle, there is an increased emphasis towards physical activity
interventions. Thanks to progressions in ubiquitous technologies,
exergames, games that facilitate and encourage exercise, have emerged as
a potential means to motivate children to exercise in a context they
find both familiar and enjoyable. While early research has shown the
potential of the genre, few games have been designed specifically with
children in mind, accommodating their unique demands. In our work, we
aim to close this gap by investigating how children react to, and make
use of an exergame designed specifically with them in mind. The aim is
to understand how different demographics of children (gender, gaming
background, exercise background, etc) react to a location-aware
exergame, in order to in the…
