RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 14 May 2013

Its been a while since my last photo update showing the progress of the New Build at the Garthdee campus of Robert Gordon University. As you can see the main entrance and plaza is almost complete, and the final stages of tidying things up are well underway at the south side of the library tower.

Sunrise Timelapse RGU Garthdee Campus

Yesterdays post contained some photographs taken from the roof of the Round Tower at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University. This post as the title says includes a number of timelapse videos taken around 06:30 in the morning just as the sun was rising.

A few images of the Round Tower may also be seen below, giving some idea of the location from where the videos were recorded & yesterdays photos were taken.

Sunrise from the Round Tower Garthdee Campus

Some photographs taken from the roof level of the Round Tower Accommodation block at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University taken around 06:30 in the morning. This early morning photographic session was organised due in part to a module I have concerning graphics with 1st year computing students. Ah – the things one does to readily promote active student engagement. Suffice to say that it was a really cold spot to be taking pictures at that time of the morning, it certainly must have been around zero degrees. You can expect to see some timelapse video in the next post, so check back again soon. The photographs are taken looking both to the east and west. The images looking east take in the new Library Tower that is expected to be operational by the end of May, the Faculty of Health & Social Care, RGU:Sport and the Aberdeen Business School in the foreground. Towards the end of the post, looking west, you will see some mountains far off in the distance, seeing these images immediately makes me think of Middle Earth, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 30 Sept 2012

It has been a number of weeks since my previous post focused on the interior of the New Build. The first week of classes has concluded and during that time some students inquired as to when the next photo update would be. Given that it’s the last day of September, it seems only fitting to finish off the first week of the semester with an update. One can see that the main entrance wall is in place and the Universities names features prominently. This has been in place for just a few weeks now. The glass surround at roof level of the library tower has also been in place a few weeks. Glass has been installed at the main entrance into the building, hence it’s getting very close to being fully watertight. Student services has been moved into level 3 of the FOHS Building, so its a one stop shop for all student queries. The other major point of note is that since the start of this week the number 1 bus now goes through campus, entering at the main entrance and exiting by ABS. Additional traffic lights have been set in place on Garthdee road to accommodate this.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 15 Aug 2012 Interiors

Nine people visited the site of the New Build at Garthdee this morning, of the nine four were from Computing. We went on a quick tour around the site, unfortunately due to work being carried out we were unable to get up onto the roof of the library tower, however we did manage to climb our way all the way up to the level below the roof. As you can see from some of the photographs looking at the FOHS building it was a very foggy day hence the views from the roof of the library tower would have been very limited. The vast majority of the photographs below are of the main open spaces. One can see an image from level seven of the library tower midway through the set (the large “07″ in the image before should prime you for same). The final pair of images show the construction of the floors which are made up of metal panels elevated up about 12 to 14 inches and one of the computer labs. To view the images in greater detail one can access the following photo album. To see how the building has evolved over the pasts months one can examine the following link.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 11 Aug 2012

The following set of photographs are focused on the south face of the build. As you can see the glazing to the library tower has been completed, with just the utility space on the roof to be clad. The final four panels to the north side of the tower were installed today (13/08/2012) thereby completing the process of glazing the primary structure of the library tower.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 1 Aug 2012

As you will see from the photographs below the glazing of the library tower is now nearing completion. A little over two weeks ago the glazing process was around the half way point. All going well it should be completed in the not too distant future and once fully weather proof the focus can shift to the internal fitting out. In just 12 months time staff should be settling in to the new build in preparation for the forthcoming 2013 Academic year.

Hard and Soft Light at the New Build Robert Gordon University

Short video showing the interplay of Hard and Soft Light as the clouds pass overhead at the New Build Robert Gordon University, Garthdee, Aberdeen, Scotland. The footage was recorded over a period of about 12 minutes or so and sped up using time remapping by around 400%. This footage was recorded around half six in the morning.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 14 July 2012

It has been just over a month since I posted the last set of photographs on the 12th June. In the past month there has been quite a good deal of work carried out, in particular, quite a substantial amount of the glazing units for library tower have been fitted in place. The main entrance walls are also coming along well. The walls have been constructed from brick and then faced off as you can see in some of the photos below. I took the first set of photographs looking from from Tullos Hill shortly after six o’clock in the morning, it was fortunate I began at this time, as when I got to the bottom and had packed away the camera it began to rain. At the present rate of progress all the exterior cladding and the installation of glazing units should be completed fairly soon, thereby setting in place the completed look and feel of the building. Additional photographs from the set below may be seen by accessing the following Album.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 12 June 2012

Its been a bit over two weeks since the last photo update. In that period the most visible change is the commencement of the cladding process to the final section – the main entrance. This addition finally gives an impression of the overall scale and mass of the building, thereby giving a clear impression of what the final end product will be like. The other change clearly evident in the first few photographs is the start made to the walls of the main entrance into the campus.

RGU Garthdee New Build views from Kincorth Hill

The weather today was once again wonderful, so I ventured up Kincorth Hill to get some panoramic shots of the city, with a particular focus of how the New Build at Robert Gordon University, Garthdee fits in with the surrounding landscape. Hopefully the following photographs will provide you with a good sense of the area and how it fits into place. The following brochure provides some very useful information detailing the walks available.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 26 May 2012

As you can see from the listings below all the other blog posts relating to the new build at Garthdee have been detailed. It has been about six weeks since my previous post, hence the need for a major update. It has been a busy time with Honours and MSc students preparing their reports for hand-in at the end of the semester. All the past month has been occupied with marking. This past week has been rather surprising as the sunshine has come out in force, with temperatures hitting 20 degrees or so. Given the weather was so good, I decided to take photographs of the current state of the new build from all directions – North, South, East & West. This should give you a very good indication of the present state of progress. Enjoy the photos, it would of course be useful to take a look at some of the previous posts on this topic to get a sense of how the building has progress over the past months. You will also find links to some photographs of a few other campuses that may perhaps inspire the mind.

Picasa Album of all the photos in the set. Those displayed on this blog post are just a selection from same.

Where were the photographs taken?
The following map should give a good idea of the rough locations from where the photographs present in this post were taken. The first batch were taken from the south side of the river starting at 10:00, whilst the images of the north face were taken in the evening roughly 18:00. Between these time I walked out westwards along the rivers edge, hence some images from Inchgarth Reservoir and continued out all the way to Culter and back for a total of 30 kilometers.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 8 April 2012

Taking a look at the pervious photo update done towards the end of February one can readily get a sense of the amount of progress that has been made in the intervening weeks. Quite an amount of additional cladding has been applied to the north face of the build as can be seen below. The steel work for the library tower is now nearing completion with the final level well under way, thus one can now get a real sense of the full height of the tower.

In all of my previous photo updates I have always taken the photographs in the morning time, however just as I was about to start taking some pictures it started to rain, hence I held off until around 18:00 in the evening.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 26 Feb 2012

Another news letter regarding the progress of the new build & masterplan came out on Friday, hence I would imagine that quite a few people would be expecting that I would run off another set of photographs during the weekend showing the latest progress.

As can be seen from the new set of photographs below, quite a substantial amount of work has been done to the main entrance area, with all of the major structural steel set in place. It would appear the cladding of the southern face is more or less complete – so will take some photos from that side in the next photo update. A bit more work has been done to the cladding and installation of windows on the north face. The library tower is coming along, a good sizable arc is now present with concrete flooring panels in place. We should probably see a good lot more in relation to cladding and progress on the library tower in the next photo update.

Professorial Lecture by Susan Craw

Attended a Professorial Lecture by Susan Craw this evening at the Garthdee campus of Robert Gordon University. The talk was titled “Smart Systems from Dumb Data“, it was divided into five distinct sections, moving along from a general introduction to beyond smart systems. A lot of the lecture was focused on the research area of Case Based Reasoning with examples from medical diagnosis and the composition of tablet formulations to audio recommendations being given. About half a dozen academics from the School of Computing were in attendance and a few PhD students, in total there was probably close to 80 people present for the lecture. The lecture commenced at 18:20 and lasted for a period of 45 minutes, after which there was some time for comments and questions before a post-lecture reception at 19:20 in H230.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 08 Feb 2012

The last photo update of the new build at Garthdee was on Sunday 22nd January 2012. At that point a good deal of work and been carried out in cladding a section on the north face of the build. In the past two weeks or so there has been some very big changes yet again. Quite a number of window units have been installed in the section that has been cladded, and preparations are underway to continue the cladding process right down towards the eastern end of the building. Work on the steel for the library has commenced with a good sizable section in place, perhaps 30 degrees of an arc up to about the 5th level. The steel for the main entrance into the building has also be set in place and makes a huge difference to the overall appearance of the site. One can really now see the overall size and shape of the building coming to the fore. The next month or should be interesting as the steel for the library tower is set into place. As per usual the photographs below should help to give you an idea of how the build is going.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 22 Jan 2012

As I had taken some photographs of the new build last week, I had planned that it would probably be at least another three or four weeks before I would take another set. However in the past week there has been a lot of changes, firstly the last of the shuttering around the central column of the Library tower has been removed allowing it to be seen for the first time unimpeded. Work has also begun on the cladding of the North face of the building. Had I waited a few weeks as planned then the next set of photographs would very likely be of how the building would look when completed. It will be interesting to see what progress will be made with the cladding of the north face over the coming week or two. One can see that all of the concrete beams making up the floor seem to be in place, and quite a number of stair wells are also visible. It may be difficult to see in the photographs, but the Teaching Drum is also well underway.

RGU Garthdee Under Construction Timelapse Video

A wide angle recording of work being carried out on the New Build at the Garthdee Campus of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. The original footage was about an hour in length & speed up to around five minutes. This was recorded on a Saturday morning as you can see quite an amount of cladding have been installed on the south face of the building. The footage was recorded from Tollohill Woods on the south bank of the Dee.

In this tighter shot one can see the main focus is on the box crane that has been instramental in the creation of the central column of the library tower. The original footage was about an hour in length & speed up to give a duration of about two minutes.

Quite a substantial amount of work has been undertaken since the last set of photographs were taken on the 4th Dec 2011. The concrete central column superstructre for the library has been completed, therefore the surrounding steel will soon start going up. Unlike the previous photo sets quite a few photographs from today include shots from the south bank of the Dee looking northwards across the river towards the Robert Gordon University Campus. One can see that quite an amount of external cladding have been put inplace on the south side of the build. This was the first day I visited during a normal working day at the site and would have to say that it was a hive of activity. Several crains were setting steel and concrete floor panels into place and several diggers were in action within the vacinity of the library tower. You will also see just a few photographs taken from the 5th floor of the FOHS Building giving a bit more of an overview of the site area in and around the library tower. Note: the set of photographs on Flickr contrains 74 images so there are plenty more views and angles to be seen.

The following are just a few photos showing the progress of the New Build at the Garthdee campus of Robert Gordon University taken on Sunday 4th December 2011. You will note that much of the superstructure eventually housing the School of Computing is clearly evident at the eastern end of the build.
