A Weekend Walking and Photographic Adventure

The weather has been absolutely wonderful here in Aberdeen the past week so I spent a good bit of time over the weekend out walking about the city and countryside. Over the weekend I walked a distance of at least 70km (30km on Saturday and 40km on Sunday). The maps below give a fairly good outline of the routes taken.

Saturday
Saturday 26th May 2012, I set off with my camera to take some photographs of the New Build of Robert Gordon University at Garthdee. Ventured up Tullows Hill, then out westwards along the riverbank before meeting up with the Deeside Railway Line heading out to Culter. Had a short look around Culter, and of course picked up some ice-cream along the way. Then it was back to Aberdeen via the Deeside Railway Line, and back to the Garthdee campus to get some photographs of the Northern face of the New Build.

Sunday
Sunday 27th May 2012, Started out at RGU Garthdee, then on to Kincorth Hill, along the coast, back to the harbour out towards the beach, all the way up to the end of the beach, back down and up again (jogging most of the way) then on to Seaton Park, the Great Northern Road, down Anderson Drive and back to the RGU Campus, Garthdee.

The weather today was once again wonderful, so I ventured up Kincorth Hill to get some panoramic shots of the city, with a particular focus of how the New Build at Robert Gordon University, Garthdee fits in with the surrounding landscape. Hopefully the following photographs will provide you with a good sense of the area and how it fits into place. The following brochure provides some very useful information detailing the walks available.

RGU Garthdee New Build – Photo Update 26 May 2012

As you can see from the listings below all the other blog posts relating to the new build at Garthdee have been detailed. It has been about six weeks since my previous post, hence the need for a major update. It has been a busy time with Honours and MSc students preparing their reports for hand-in at the end of the semester. All the past month has been occupied with marking. This past week has been rather surprising as the sunshine has come out in force, with temperatures hitting 20 degrees or so. Given the weather was so good, I decided to take photographs of the current state of the new build from all directions – North, South, East & West. This should give you a very good indication of the present state of progress. Enjoy the photos, it would of course be useful to take a look at some of the previous posts on this topic to get a sense of how the building has progress over the past months. You will also find links to some photographs of a few other campuses that may perhaps inspire the mind.

Picasa Album of all the photos in the set. Those displayed on this blog post are just a selection from same.

Where were the photographs taken?
The following map should give a good idea of the rough locations from where the photographs present in this post were taken. The first batch were taken from the south side of the river starting at 10:00, whilst the images of the north face were taken in the evening roughly 18:00. Between these time I walked out westwards along the rivers edge, hence some images from Inchgarth Reservoir and continued out all the way to Culter and back for a total of 30 kilometers.

Hillwalking in Glen Clova 21st May 2012

Today I went hillwalking with some students at the School of Computing and a fellow lecturer. The following are some photographs from our trip to Glen Clova taken today 21st May 2012. We set off at 09:30 in the morning and drove 82 miles before finally reaching our destination of Glen Clova, along the way we stopped off to get some supplies for the trip this was around 10:55. By 12:30 we were well on our way up to an elevation of 870 meters, finally reaching to top around 14:00, and finally completed our descent by 16:20, at which time we headed off to visit the Caterthuns – Hill forts. We finally made our way back to Aberdeen by 19:00. All it all it was a great day out and as you can see from the photograph the weather was great too.

Western Gateway Building, University College Cork

The following photographs are of the Western Gateway Building, University College Cork, located as you could probably guess on the Western Road. The building was completed and operational for the start of the 2008/09 academic year. Hopefully the photographs below give some sense of what the building is like. It measures roughly 100 meters x 60 meters and is five stories high. It houses the Departments of Computing and Mathematics amongst others.

Botanical Gardens, Taichung, Taiwan

Quite a number of the previous posts have focused on photographs within the general area of Europe, so here are a few photographs of the Botanical Gardens located in the city of Taichung, Taiwan. They are located in the same area as (and are part of) the National Museum of Natural Science, so you can expect a few photographs from this museum in the near future as well. These photographs were taken in mid December 2007 when the weather was about 20 degrees C.
